A Guide to Nursing in Australia

If serving people with care and compassion is your passion, becoming a nurse in Australia can be a perfect profession for you. Nursing is not just great fun, but bit challenging and exciting as well. There are great opportunities and bright prospects for the career-minded nurse to make this an exciting career.

Career opportunities for nurses in Australia

All nurses must be registered to practice in Australia. Currently Australia has two levels of nurses - registered nurses and enrolled nurses. To become a Registered Nurse you need to complete a Bachelor of Nursing, which is available at most Australian universities. While to become an Enrolled Nurse you need to complete a Diploma in Nursing or a Certificate IV in Nursing at a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) or any vocational institution.

There are superb career opportunities with permanent and temporary nursing work available in Australia. To work in Australia, you must first have your qualification assessed by relevant authority and gain registration with one of the state or territory nursing registration boards. As a nurse from other countries, you need to qualify English proficiency tests like IELTS or OET before visa grant.

Whether you have a high level of skills and experience or need to gain additional skills, there is a visa to suit you. If you are between 18 and 30, you may be able to come to Australia temporarily for a working holiday. This visa allows you to stay for 12 months and work as a nurse with any one employer for a maximum of six months, provided your work remains incidental to your holiday.
